Figlio di Guido Bussotti e di Ines Zancanaro, fratello di Silvano, noto musicista e nipote di Tono Zancanaro, fu partigiano con il nome di battaglia "Stanco". A Firenze nel 1943 Renzo Bussotti fu arrestato dai fascisti della "Banda carità" e messo con altri davanti al plotone di esecuzione. Gli accadde quello che era accaduto a Dostoevskij: prima di ordinare "Fuoco" i capo disse ai morituri che era tutto uno scherzo Fin da piccolo attratto dalle forme e dai colori; i suoi quadri sono unici, hanno vigore, sofferenza, genialità. La sua pittura ci rappresenta, non come vorremmo essere, ma come siamo e la crudezza del suo pennello non è inferiore, oggi, a quella che doveva apparire al pubblico e ai committenti l'opera di pittori del passato di rado compresi nella cerchia dei favoriti.
